Hello Badgers, and welcome (or welcome back) to Brock University!
The year has just started, and I’ve been so happy to see campus absolutely buzzing with energy already. Whether you are a new or returning student, I wanted to share a few messages with you…
The First Day Nerves
If you’ve been asked the classic question, “How are you feeling about starting university?” you might have said nervous, excited, or maybe a bit of both. I’ll admit, I felt the same before stepping into this role – and even more so before addressing all of you for the first time.
A few days ago, I shared those nerves with my best friend from high school. She reminded me of the very first performance she ever came to watch me in. She said I was amazing and so confident – even though I happened to be dressed as the seagull in our high school production of The Little Mermaid. Her advice was pretty simple: if I could stand on stage in front of an audience in a full seagull costume, then surely, I can address all of you. Looking back on that, I’m quite relieved no one has asked me to wear a badger costume yet.
Anyways, in reflecting on that memory, I thought that might be a good reminder for all of you; if you’re feeling nervous, or worried about finding your place here at Brock, at least you don’t have to do it dressed as a seagull. You get to show up as yourself – and that’s more than enough.

Your Brock Journey
When I was choosing what university to go to, I was thinking about more than just a degree; and I’m sure many of you can relate. I wanted the opportunity for personal growth, community, and the overall university experience; and Brock offered me exactly that. I had an amazing time at Brock during my undergrad, but it didn’t come without its challenges. I have felt burnt out, completely lost, and unsure of what I’m doing or if I belonged; but through all of it, I learned the importance of being honest with myself, asking for help, and leaning on the amazing community that Brock offers. Most importantly, I learned how valuable it can be to take up space – especially when it’s hard. If you don’t feel fully prepared for class, go anyways. If you’re nervous about attending an event, show up nervous. You have earned your place here, so take it, and know that there is space for you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all path through university. Each of you will have a unique experience, and that’s what makes it so special. Your time at Brock will shape you in ways you can’t predict right now. Some of the best parts of your university experience will come from moments you didn’t plan for – the people you meet, the opportunities you take, and even the challenges you face.
So, don’t worry about having it all figured out today. Instead, give yourself permission to grow, to explore, and to create your own path here. Trust that you belong in this space, and that there’s room for your voice, your passions, and your story.
We’re Here for You
As your Students’ Union, BUSU is here to cheer you on, listen when you need support, and help make these years some of the most memorable of your life.
During my years as a student, I have felt so supported by our student union and university, and I am eager to hear your stories so that we can continue to work together to make Brock a school where every student can thrive.
Here’s to new beginnings, finding your place, and making Brock your own.
Have a wonderful year, Badgers – we’re so glad you’re here.
