Why

IT'S TIME FOR: better events, bigger O-Weeks, greater wellness initiatives, more introverted activities, professional development opportunities, cooking classes, paint nights, mature student support, off campus student support, increased athletic support, more de-stressers during exams, more free breakfasts, amongst countless other services...

ACCESS: First year students will have free access to events all year round, including O-Week, Homecoming, Frost Week, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, etc...

EQUITY: Voting YES will help bridge the gap between what events and services BUSU can offer to both its first year and upper year students.

BROCK’S REPUTATION: Voting YES will ensure BUSU is following the leading funding model implemented at most Post-Secondary Institutions in the province of Ontario.

View MOU
O-Week costs about $300,000 to run. From the artists for the concert, to the renting of tents and tables for vendor fair, O-Week is our single most expensive week. With this much money being spent, we are left with only $50,000 for the rest of the year, to serve 16,000 students. That is $3.13 per student to make their university experience memorable. It's time that we give our students the experience they deserve.

Over at BUSU, our summer was spent researching how other schools fund their events and services. We found that every other university in Canada has a fee (anywhere from $75-$120) that explicitly funds their campus experience. Schools like McMaster provide their students with quality events throughout the year, not just at the beginning like us. With this levy we will be able to fund activities like end-of-year carnivals, Frost week concerts, introverted initiatives and transportation for off-campus students!

What

If you vote yes and this referendum is successful, each incoming first year student (starting sept 2019) will have $100 charged to their tuition automatically.

Because O-Week is targeted primarily at first-years, 2/3 of the money collected will be used for O-Week. There will be no more selling O-Week passes! All O-Week events will be free for first-years, and they will not have to choose which events to go to based on money.
