BUSU to hold “Candidates Cafe”

Press Release: Brock students union to host “Candidates Café.”

The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) is reviving a past initiative called the “Candidates Café.”  The “Café” will take place on Tuesday January 22nd at 12pm – 2pm in the SkyBar Lounge.  During this time BUSU will have current elected representatives, election staff and full-time staff at the disposal of election hopefuls in an attempt to help them understand BUSU better before they make the final decision to put their name forward election.

Chris Green, Manager Marketing & Communication of BUSU said “We identified information about the elected positions as a possible barrier for students thinking about running.  It is our hope that through this and other channels we can provide as much insight as possible into how their students union operates and how important the elected officials are in the organization.”  During the “Café” BUSU will be providing presentations, materials and a Q & A session.  BUSU will also be providing beverages and light finger foods.

All students thinking about running in the February election are encouraged to stop in during the “Café” and to ask questions.  If students are not available during this time, they are encouraged to seek out the current executive and staff to as questions.  Chief Returning Officer and officiator of the BUSU election process Jimmy Norman said “everyone here at BUSU is supportive of potential candidates and are more than willing to answer any questions whether they are about the finances, the structure, programs, services or even the election process itself.”

Nominations for the four (4) BUSU Executive positions and three (3) Directors of the Board seats have been open to undergraduate students since January 7th and will close at 4:30pm on January 25th.  The nine (9) day election campaign kicks off on February 4th 2013 and commences with three (3) days of voting taking place February 12, 13 and 14th.

Students are asked to stay tuned to their Brock University email accounts during the voting days as the link for the secure online ballot will be sent to them.  As always, BUSU will be hosting on-campus polling stations in high traffic areas.
